How Not to Die by Michael Greger M.D. is the most spell binding health and nutrition book I’ve ever read. I could not put this book down! Every chapter is full of information linking the foods we eat to the diseases we die from. But we don’t have to succumb to this food causing death cycle. Greger also leads us to the foods which are proven to reverse and ultimately end the top killer diseases. This book is not just a good read but a must read for everyone looking to lead a more healthy life.

Three Reasons Why You Should Read How Not To Die

1. A Healthy life is just a few diet changes away

In all fairness, many of the dietary changes Michael writes about in How Not To Die, have been recommended to me by my husband. He’s tried to get me to change my diet for years and I never listened! Isn’t that the way life is? We don’t want to make changes because at the time we don’t feel like we need to. Suddenly I find myself needing to make some changes and after reading How Not To Die, I actually want to change my eating habits.

How Not To Die isn’t just your regular diet book. In fact it’s not a diet book at all and to prove it you should check out Greger’s other book called, “How Not To Diet“. Instead of diets, this book is about the connection between diet and disease. The book devotes entire chapters to the top killers such as: heart disease, infectious disease, blood cancer, high blood pressure and breast cancer. Every section is riveting describing the relationship of food with disease but the chapter about breast cancer was the one where I placed my bookmarks.

2. Michael Greger’s personal convictionsI

Most passionate people are that way for a reason. Michael’s passion for medicine began when he saw his terminally ill grandma live another thirty years through diet changes. While in medical school he soon realized that medicine doesn’t necessarily promote or understand how the food we eat affects our bodies. Nor does the medical community always care! Now, I’m not painting all medical professionals with a broad brush. A lot of changes have happened since the printing of this book but I think we could all agree that good health can begin when we begin to take part in our healing by eating better foods.

3. Strong Medical Arguments

How Not To Die is such a well written book. For each of the medical diseases discussed I feel like I came away understanding the disease as well as how to make simple changes to reverse the effects of wrong foods. For every point Michael makes about disease and food he lists the studies to prove his cause. If a study came out inconclusive he also informs us. There are plenty of medical terms and arguments put forth to make you feel Michael Greger M.D. is an authority on his topic.

What’s not to like about How Not To Die?

Meat lovers beware! Michael Greger makes no excuses for eating a whole food, plant based diet. He lets us know up front he loves animals but he wants people to live and be healthy too. Just read the book and come to your own conclusions about keeping meat in your diet. Make the choices right for you and your family. If going meatless won’t work completely- don’t worry. Just make better choices about where you’d buy your meat or cut down on meat consumption. Whatever you do to cut down on processed foods will be better for your body. So go cold turkey or make it a gradual change. It’s all up to you.

Why did I give How Not To Die 5 Stars?

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I gave How Not To Die 5 stars because it was a life changing book for me. As I was reading it, I was making changes to the foods I purchased. My refrigerator and pantry are now stocked with many healthy foods like never before. I am eating more greens, oatmeal, fruits and less processed foods and sweets. The book was written in a way which I could easily understand and didn’t need a medical degree to interpret. It was written for the everyday person who deep down knows they should change their eating habits but needs the extra push. This book was my extra push and I hope it’s yours as well.

“Every book, old or new deserves a chance to be seen.”

That’s my Library Page Motto.
To accomplish this, I face out each book spine evenly so every book has a chance to be seen. (I like neat rows of books!)
But more than that, I believe some books actually speak to me. Not with words but with something mysterious which makes me pull them off the shelf and into my life. Thanks for reading my book reviews. Make sure you comment if you’ve read this book!
